In this method of Nondestructive testing the penetration property of X-ray and Gamma rays to detect the discontinuities. The object to be inspected is placed between the radiation source and a piece of film. X-rays or gamma rays pass through the object. The object will stop some of the radiation. Thicker and denser area will stop more of the radiation and show on the film lighter than thinner or less dense area. Most weld defects will show on the film darker than the surrounding area.

Some of the advantages of Radiographic Testing that are often cited include:
  • It gives a permanent record
  • It can detects internal Flaws
  • It can detects volumetric flaws readily
  • It can be used on most materials
  • It gives direct Images
  • With this method, real time Imaging is possible
As with all NDT methods, Radiographic Testing also has its limitations, which include:
  • Radiation Health
  • Can be sensitive to defect orientation and could miss planar flaws
  • Has limited ability to detect fine cracks
  • Access is required to both sides of the object
  • Limited thickness of the material can be penetrated
  • Skilled radiographic interpretation is required
  • Require high capital cost
  • Relatively slow process
  • Require high capital cost
  • Requires high running cost
